Anita Belle

National Maltese & Small Dog Alliance

Anita Belle was born May 12, 2009. She was brought into our clinic and presented nearly comatose with heat stroke. She was just over 1 pound. The owner’s could not afford her treatment and described episodes that sounded like hypoglycemia.

Since my daughter has a Maltese, we are a bit partial to them, and she was just so precious, we took her in. We hooked her up to IV fluids and stabilized her.

Ashlee, my daughter, took her home over the weekend to nurse her back to health. She got better, was eating big meals, playing with her other Maltese, and then she started acting real funny. She would bite at her and press her head into the cage. She was eating good and but started crashing and did not respond to dextrose, so we started treating her as if she had a liver shunt. She was started on an all vegetarian diet and lactulose and she slowly improved.

Ashlee kept her at her house as long as she could, up until about 3 weeks ago. She also talked to a lot of different specialists and we did all the blood testing to confirm that she has a portosystemic shunt. The general cost of this surgery is from $1200-$4000.

She is about 4.5 pounds right now and is medically stable on hepatic diet and lactulose. Her bloodwork is good enough for her to undergo surgery at anytime. She is a really fun puppy but is definitely a special needs girl.

Thanks for any help!
Susan Pickle, DVM

I Need your help with Donations. My name is Anita Belle and I was born with Liver Shunt. The doctor said they can fix me where I will live a long life but it will cost a lot of money. My Mommy and Daddy loved me so much that they gave me up so that I could live because they didn't have the money to pay for my surgery.

If you can just send a little money, 5 or 10 dollars or even 1 dollar we can get enough money to pay him so I can live a full life and play like other puppies.

You can send your donations three ways. You can mail them to:
